Again, this is a photography my cousin bought. S. J. Dixon Photography at 249 Yonge Street in Toronto and was founded in 1872 by S. J. Dixon. the year 1893, Dixon's wife Sarah took over for unspecified reasons (perhaps Dixon died?). By clicking that hyperlink above, you can see a newspaper advertisement put out by this photograph company stating what they do in their shop. Along the side, you can see their insignia as well as multiple other ads.
Just an extra bit of information for you: here are their listings in the Toronto directory...
There is no note of who the two people in this photograph are, although I believe the picture was taken in the very late 1800s or very early 1900s due to their attire.
Hi Emily, I live in the UK and have an old family group photo that has an embossed trade mark on the mount, like the one you show, but mine has : J Dixon, 301 Yonge Street, Toronto. Do you know if this company exported these mounts? I do not have evidence for this family having travelled to Toronto in the early 1900s. Thank you, Ed Jones.
ReplyDeleteHello Ed, there were 2 Dixons taking photographs in Toronto at this time period. Samuel John, listed above, and James Dixon, by whom your photo was taken. These cards would have been made only for the photographer, not shipped elsewhere. Do you know who is in the photo? Happy to help on this side of the Pond if need be. — Gordie

DeleteHello Gordie, thank you for your response. I got this photo, along with others, after they were discovered in the roof space of a property in Plymouth, Devon. The property had previously been owned by Reg Veasey, who died in 1987. His wife, Louisa, was formerly Hutton. A member of the Veasey family is sure that the photo is not Veasey, so I believe it is of Richard John Hutton, 1884-1954, Louisa's father, who was born and died in Plymouth. His attestation in 1915 describes him as a skilled plumber who has left no evidence that he ever visited Canada. I would welcome any thoughts you might offer on the origins of this mysterious photograph.
DeleteFound! Ancestry: Richard J Hutton, plumber, b1884, arrival at Quebec, 17 May 1912, final destination Toronto.
DeleteI have a photo of my great-grandparents taken by "Dixon - Cor. King and Yonge Sts, Toronto"
